Meez Waaarnnnnerrr,
Yesterday, I watched 2 3D movies in one day. I don't think that's very safe for your brain...
My friend Allen, who does sound engineering things and stuffs and things for Lavalier showed me a wonderful waste of time book illustration geek-out site which led me to another waste of time book illustration geek-out site and I loved every minute of it. I don't know if I could find a favorite, but I really really love these creeps:
All the engravings by Abigail Rorer for Mimpish Squinnies: Reginald Farrer's Short Guide to Worthless Plants (Lone Oak Press, 2007). Rorer based her illustrations on descriptions of plants in the book entitled The English Rock Garden by Reginald Farrer (1919), a garden writer (I guess in the 1900's there was such a thing?). His writings were descriptive and grandiose: Rorer captures them with perfection. Here is one of my favorites (for the one with the bones and what looks like a decrepit orange sack of a heart):
Physalis alkekengi
Who will not be made sick by the mere name of these rank and leafy weeds, with their ostentatious "Japanese Lanterns" of orange and red? These are, of course, the dismal sere decorations of winter; and any flower that allows its corpses out for so grim a purpose can only be reckoned as a blackleg in the floral Union, going out to illegitimate employment when all decent plants are enjoying the night when no man can work; and earning by this treachery a place in the garden to which their rank ugliness of summer would certainly not entitle them.
Spot on.
Makes me miss my mother, who we used to call "1800's woman" because descriptions of everyday things were like reading a Bronte novel.
See you tonight, lady loo. I just drank a glass of coconut milk, which is my new steez. Blend that stuff with an avocado and a banana and you got goodness in a glass.
love,
Yas

Dear Jessica,
I am a terrible friend. Horrible human-being. Remember those stunning pictures of our dear friend Lexi? I forgot to photo credit them...
All the photos where taken by the very talented Drew Innis, and because of my numnut stupidity I will now dedicate this post to him: ALL PHOTOS BELOW WHERE TAKEN BY THE WONDERFUL DREW INNIS. HERE IS A LINK TO HIS WEBSITE SO YOU CAN LOOK AT MORE OF HIS STUPENDOUS WORK: http://www.drewinnis.com/
He was even the cinematographer for Mary Last Seen, the short that Lexi starred in that won an award at the Cannes Film Festival. I'm a real jerk face.
Well, now that I've made up for my past mistakes I can move on with a clear conscious, thank you for listening, Jess.
Love you,
Yas

vayazzle,
i love children's books. even before i was a nanny, i loved children's books. and the funny thing i just realized today is that several of my favorites are actually by/illustrated by the same man, wolf erlbruch. a few are in german and a few are in english so i guess that's how i missed this connection but, wow, if i wasn't stunned when i finally realized. maybe this is why i enjoy children's books so very much--i'm not too bright.
anyway, the following are some illustrations from his strange, beautiful and magical books.

my favorite is ente, tod und tulpe. i got it at the dessau bauhaus bookshop and it's one of my most treasured things. it's about a duck's encounter with death. it sounds a little upsetting but it's not. it's beautiful and so nicely spare and poetic.
xo.
